Six time-travel romance movies you should add to your playlist
Some time-travel films are about the consequences of meddling with fate — others about changing ourselves. Time-travel romance movies are about fixing the things we should have said or done in our relationships. I’ve made something of a study of them. Perhaps because, until I was about 40, I was pretty unlucky in love. By the time I did settle down, I had watched many time travel movies where people tried to fix their failed romances. This article is about the ones I think are worth watching again.
Before we start, I want to dismiss a couple of movies: one is Back to the Future.
Through a particular lens, you might suggest that it’s a rom-com about Marty trying to get his parents back together — but their relationship is not the central relationship in the film. Marty’s relationship with his girlfriend is so incidental to the plot that she has less than five minutes of screen time. The central relationship is between Marty and Doc. It’s a time travel bromance. Besides, as iconic as it was, few people can now watch Back to the Future without thinking about Rick and Morty.
The other is About Time (2013). I don’t mind the movie too much — it’s pretty entertaining. But it has some massive plot holes I can’t get past. The final scene, in particular, completely undermines the internal rules of…
