There were some golden years in the 80s when just about every MIT graduate seemed to have a start-up in the garage. Apple and Microsoft began that way. Both Facebook and Google (famously) started life as college projects.

But some stories carry more resonance than others, whether it’s down to perseverance or luck — and it’s those I’m saluting here. If you’re in the early stages of getting your own business off the ground, you can take heart from these success stories. Here are three of the greatest garage start-ups that went global.

Hewlett Packard

Good old HP — a solid, reliable name that seems to have been around since year zero. Would it surprise you to know that they were the original garage start-up?
